Changing Male Roles in Today's World: A Christian Perspective for Men and the Women Who Care About Them
For centuries the male has played the role of a mythical character
created and nurtured by tradition and custom. This hypothetical
man is a tower of strength physically and emotionally, exudes
unshakable confidence, is aggressive and forceful. Now there are
signs that all is not well with this mythical male and it is becoming
increasingly difficult to live up to this kingly image. As the Chris-
tian male ponders the health and unhealth of his role, the ques-
tions occur-What does the Bible say? Does the Bible provide
perspective for coping with Christian identity in a fast changing
world? Olson probes the biblical guidelines for releasing man from
the gender-based stereotype that inhibits his ability to enjoy life
to its fullest. He separates the cultural assumptions of biblical
times from the explicit teaching of the Bible regarding the male/
female relationship. He calls upon men to follow the example of
Jesus, who by his ministry challenged much of the contemporary
description of what it means to be a man in our present-day culture.
Men are encouraged to claim a new freedom of expression in
relationships with family members and work associates which will
enrich their lives with a greater dimension of spiritual growth.
Speaking of the future, Olson envisions a new freedom in which
"success becomes more of an inner harmony, more of sensing a
deep relatedness to others."
