I came upon this book while researching a series of messages on the Holy Spirit. I found it to be exegetically thorough, readable and well reasoned.
Jack was a prof at Dallas Seminary so his exegetical thoroughness did not surprise me. It is also highly readable. Like the late John R. W. Stott, Jack has a very lucid and irenic style. He is not setting up straw men just to knock them down again. He is not picking a fight. But he is very clearly articulating an argument that so many of us in conservative Evangelical ranks have felt for a long time: we are just giving lip-service to the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives and ministries and we are ignoring what our exegesis is clearly telling us, that the Spirit is still speaking and working powerfully among us today, and not limited to the miracle of salvation.
Finally, both books are well reasoned (this one is a dual volume). Even though the books are auto-biographical in nature they aren't limited to anecdote. Jack presents a logical, well documented account of his experiences with a minimum of pathos. He recognizes the abuses of emotionalism within the broader pentecostal and charismatic movements but he doesn't allow us to throw the baby out with the bath water. He does not allow commitment to one system of theology or the other to obscure what scripture is clearly presenting. He makes soundly biblical theological arguments for the positions he takes.
If you are a preaching pastor looking for reliable study material on the ministry of the Holy Spirit among us you can't do better than Jack Deere.
